Top 5 Meditation Distractions and How to Solve Them

More often than not, meditation practitioners experience distractions during the meditation process. It cannot be avoided and is a natural part of the human experience. It is important to know however, what are the ways to handle distractions when they arise during the meditation process. 

In this article, we’ll get to know are the most common meditation distractions we might face how we can solve those distractions when they arise without losing our concentration nor our patience during the meditation. By reading this article you’ll go from being irritated because of the distractions during meditation to gradually allowing such distractions to pass by without giving much notice or energy to it.

Tip 1. Processing Recent Thoughts

Upon starting meditation, the most common distraction is the thought you were having just before you begin to meditate. It's natural -  the mind needs time to process current thoughts before shifting its gears towards meditation. These thoughts can be about the movie you just watch or the math problem you had difficulty solving or the seen chat of your adviser, it could be anything! Do not be shaken! It can be helpful for you to give your mind a moment to process all of these, and essentially give the mind a moment to chunk all of these then move on.

 

 Tip 2. Following Random thoughts

The mind can be distracted and sidetracked by inconsequential events. That is why it is important to be attentive when a harmless thought emerges during meditation. If you find yourself pursuing the thought, gently acknowledge that you are distracted and gently bring your attention back to the meditation. It is important that when you notice these thoughts, to not indulge in them and get pulled into the story. Practice bringing your attention back to the present moment. 

 

Tip 3. The Song in your head. 

 There are certain thoughts that have the power to stay a little longer than the other thoughts, just for example the song that keeps playing over and over in your head. The strength of repetitive thoughts makes them obsessive. What you can do about this is to relax your breathing, settle into your meditation, and in a span of a moment, you’ll be surprised that it’s already gone.

Dozing off during meditation is very common. What you can do about this is to hold on to the sensations of your breath. Staying focused on the breath will help you  stay awake and be present when you start to feel sleepy.
